Intrusion prevention systems

An Intrusion prevention system (IPS) is a network security device that monitors network and/or activities for tracking malicious or unwanted procedures and behaviors and can react to those, in real-time, to block or completly prevent those activities. Systems like Network-based IPS, for example, will operate in-line to monitor all existing network traffic for malicious code scripts or attacks to the network. When an attack is detected, it will drop the offending packets while still allowing all other healthy traffic to pass. Intrusion prevention technology used in this devices is considered by some to be an extension of intrusion detection (IDS) technology.

Intrusion prevention systems resolve ambiguities in passive network systems monitoring by placing detection systems in-line and increasing the security. In order to magnify the performance and accuracy of classification mapping, most IPS use the destination port in their signature format. As intrusion prevention systems were originally a literal extension of intrusion detection systems, they continue to be related.
