cisco Useful Tip

I’ve used everything from ipchains on a bsd server, to sonicwall, to netscreen, to the ASA. The ASA is very powerful, and features a friendly intuitive interface for new users (ASDM).

The integrated switch and power-over-ethernet ports are a great bonus.

  1. Miranda says

This book just took 2 days to my work after ordering. Blazing fast!

  2. Goh says

This book is a necessity if you need to know about Cisco routers! Anyone who’s ever tried to read Cisco documentation can attest to the fact that their ‘manuals’ are overwhelming and include a lot of nonsense. This book presents the information in an easy-to-understand manner and gets right to the point. If you need a crash course, THIS is the book to get!

  3. Loera says

This book was a real surprise. I had low expectations for such a short text (122 pages) but, this is a great book for anyone needing an mid-level how to do it now reference. The chapters are short and to the point. The author seems very expeienced and has many good sugestions clearly born from that experience.

It is a great book for experienced network engineers to keep handy for say a jr. admin. Give this book to somone who hasn’t ever touched a router (but, knows the fundamentals of networking) and they’ll have a Cisco router up and running out of the box in less than an hour.

This was a real timesaver for me (to not have to handhold my staff) when I had to deploy a large network with a small inexperienced staff. It raised the productivity of my group overnight and allowed me to focus on the big problems, then later come back and explain the details to them.

  4. Miles says

This is a great book. I wish I had this book when I was just starting to learn the Cisco CLI. This book includes all kinds of Cisco and networking related know how. Like how-to pick an isp, find a host on the network (down to the switchport), and how to make your router/switch secure with ssh. My only wish would be for another book from Lucas called Cisco Switches for the desperate. This book is an excellent value, and an easy read. Michael Lucas keeps this book interesting. Other BOOKS in this industry could learn a few things from Cisco Routers for the Desperate 2nd edition.

  5. Valadez says

I found this book to be very easy to understand, and right on track for a net admin to use, to fill in information on Cisco routers and switches. The way the book is written, it is tailored to individuals w/ extensive network and server experience that need a little help w/ routers. I have been able to refer back to the book for information needed for daily use on these pieces of equipment.

  6. Jetter says

Toby and Anthony Velte have done a superb job on this book. I have been an IT professional for over 12 years. I have owned an ISP and consulted with many companies regarding their network infrastructures. The title of this book almost made me pass it up. I’m glad I didn’t. I found myself reading this book and looking forward to the next chapter. This book is a good overview of Cisco Fusion architectures, and how to apply it in a real, pragmatic way. It was refreshing how complex technologies and ideas were made simple by good writing. This book is pure candy for an IT professional and a must read for any network engineer or designer. I’ll be keeping my eyes open for any other books authored by Toby and Anthony Velte.

  7. Milton says

I thoroughly recommend this book to beginners and experienced people alike. It’s scope is large but it explains everything in a satisfactory way. It has greatly enhanced my knowledge of IP technology. If you are not particularly interested in Cisco equipment, it is still well worth reading as you can skip over a lot of Cisco specific stuff or just read it as realistic examples.

  8. Rincon says

Ordered this book and didn’t need it in the end. Seemed like it took a while to get to me though. Surely I’ll need in for the field I am in so it will get put to use. Arrived in new condition though.

  9. Quesnay says

I bought this book to increase my knowledge in areas where I was perhaps “weak” assuming I could skim the stuff that I already knew. I wanted a book that would give an overall view of telecommunications and how the pieces of the network fit together, I wanted to learn more about the technical side to things without becoming an expert in everything. And what’s a better source than Cisco? Who doesn’t use a Cisco product somewhere in their network? I was a Project Manager for a CLEC and managed any complicated technical project that they could throw my way. I had to learn about every aspect of our network, at least enough to manage the project, people and the vendors. I’ve always had a Newton’s Telecom Dictionary at my side and between that and Google, if there was something that I didn’t quite grasp, I could pick up what I needed to know quickly using those two sources and get me on my way. While these two sources were great, they didn’t always explain the “why” of things, in which case I would further clarify with an engineer. I was hoping the book would replace the need to ask an engineer.

One of the reviewer’s gave this book 1 star review, I was curious to see if he/she had the same issues with it as I did. The one star review said that there were technical inaccuracies. Well, I have to say when I started reading this book, I found the same thing but it isn’t quite that simple. Unfortunately, I cannot find an exact example of this (as I put this book down a while ago) but I can give a general scenario. In the early chapters of the book, they would give some blanket statement about, oh let’s say routers have one protocol used. Now, I know for a fact they don’t, so I went back to the index and found later in the book they list other protocols. In their efforts to ease a beginner into learning about router’s they over simplify and then later correct themselves. This drove me nuts. I would get 5 pages in, think to myself, I don’t think that is right and then learn they clarify and give more details later in the book. Perhaps it is my learning style but they way they over simplified things in the beginning chapters was confusing and I just found myself flipping to the back of the book where they were more specific. Yet, if I didn’t read the beginning of the book, then I was missing some of the elementary aspects. Perhaps if you know nothing about telecommunications, this book would be useful. Or perhaps if you can handle them telling you one thing and then later accept them telling you that is a lot more complicated then you will like this book. But I am the type of person, you tell me something and I file that bit of information away to be used at a later time. If I continued reading this book, I would have filed a lot of bad information, and as a woman in telecommunications, I don’t ever like to be wrong. Not knowing something, I can handle because I can learn…being wrong just makes you lose respect.

  10. Sackett says

I was looking for an objective and well written book introducing the Cisco product line and I found it. I had originally found the 2nd edition in the library and enjoyed it so much I ordered it on Amazon and found that there was a very recent 4th edition.

The authors know their Cisco networking and are not afraid to mention some of the shortcomings of Cisco along with the many positive points. It’s also nice to read a data book by authors who have a sense of humor. Sometimes the dryness of the writing of most data guides is exhausting. The authors should be congratulated on a fine series of books. Thank you.

  11. Iribe says

I highly recommend this book to anyone desiring to learn the basics about Cisco networking. This book has great visual illustration and easy to understand wording that a person can learn the terminologies and their functions. You will learn the OSI model and the way each layer communicate with each other. The technical aspect of the book is a guideline to understanding networking infrastructure, network design, securing a network and many more function such as VPN.

  12. VanCleve says

I’m a network professional who bought the book to test my knowledge on the subject and to my surprise learned a few things. This book is a must read for newbies who wants to understand how a network works.

  13. Rosenburg says

I purchased this book to learn more about networking, and you will learn
quite alot from it. Every subject is covered, from the beginning of the
Internet to present-day systems, including legacy devices and topologies.
If you are looking for a book to show you how to network YOUR setup, this
can help, but is not the focus and subject of this book.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants a good understanding of network-
ing principles, methodologies, and implementation from a LAN to WAN scale.
This book does require some intelligence regarding the subjects, and will
be useful for an intermediate to advanced user.

  14. Lambell says

The best book I’ve ever seen to study network and network related basics. I can recommend it for people without any network know-how and it’s also a great reference book for IT and network experts to refresh their knowledge.

A lot of high quality illustrations supporting the easy to read text.

    Marco

  15. Ungamrung says

Very good book, well written and easy to understand. Covers all aspects of networking and VoIP at a high level (which is exactly what the authors state is their intent). Each chapter could be the subject of a number of books. This is a good all around primer which will give you enough knowledge to be able to get the most from more in-depth books. I recommend this book for anyone intersted in an overview of the subject matter.

  16. Hidalgo says

I am Microsoft cetified trainer, I teach this book for CCNA students, it was too easy and I recommend it for new and expert students.
